The Herd Behind Every Nesting Heart: A Story of Montana Pastures, Ten Overflowing Bags of Fleece, and One Rancher’s Promise to Backyard Birds
How a chance drive down Cottonwood Road turned two former Las Vegas city dwellers into alpaca ranchers—and why over 2,299 bird lovers are rushing to hang these hand-packed nesting hearts before the herd moves south to Texas.

Every Vintage Wire Heart is hand-packed in our barn using three natural, undyed shades of raw alpaca fiber—giving wild songbirds the warmest, safest lining for their nests.
Where It All Began: A Fateful Drive Down Cottonwood Road
In April 2019, we packed up our fast-paced life in Las Vegas, Nevada, and moved to the quiet mountain valleys of Bozeman, Montana. Yes—it was a completely different world, and we loved every single minute of it.
One crisp afternoon, we were out exploring our new area along Cottonwood Road. I was looking out the window at the mountain scenery when I suddenly spotted something foreign grazing behind a fence.
“WHAT ARE THOSE?! Slow down so I can see them!” I shouted.

Driving past Alpacas of Montana on Cottonwood Road—just 2.5 miles from our house—changed our lives forever.
We were passing right by Alpacas of Montana, a mere 2.5 miles from our house. I came home, immediately got on the computer to learn everything about them, and sent an email asking if we could meet them and the critters.
Very soon after, we did exactly that—standing in the middle of 80+ alpacas roaming around. Heaven on earth! It was so much fun that we fell hook, line, and sinker.

Morning Coffee, Evening Wine, and a Barn Full of Personalities
We were already in the process of building a barn on our property, so the timing was perfect to add them in. After a full year of visiting, volunteering, and watching the herd, we picked out our first 5 females. It was a very hard decision, but we had our favorites—and they all have such different personalities!
We built a cozy spot in our barn that I call our “urban barn social area.” We have coffee in the morning and wine in the evening right there with our animals:
Shorn from Brownie, Bea & Delta — rich earth tones that blend naturally into garden trees.
Shorn from Sweet Potato Pie (“Pie”), Ruthie & Millie — ultra-soft, hollow-core thermal fiber.
Shorn from Steviesnicks, Reyna & Rosie — plus our horses Buckwheat & Barbie and dogs Riley, Evie & Hope!

From Sweet Potato Pie and Brownie to our horses Buckwheat & Barbie and our three dogs—every day in the barn is pure joy (even when I mix up their names like kids!).
The June Shearing Dilemma: “What Are You Doing With 10 Bags of Fiber?!”
When our alpacas were shorn in June so they could stay cool for the summer, I ended up standing in the barn surrounded by 10 massive bags of raw alpaca fiber.
My husband shook his head, looked at the mountain of fluff, and said: “What are you doing with all of this?!”
Well, I love working with their fiber—cleaning it, hand-carding it, and just having it in my hands is like therapy to me. It is so impossibly soft! And the moment I took a basket of freshly brushed fiber outside onto the porch, local chickadees, titmice, and cardinals swooped down to gather beakfuls for their nests.

⚠️ Why Backyard Bird Experts Warn Against Cotton, Yarn & Dryer Lint
Many bird lovers put out household scraps without realizing the hidden dangers to unfeathered hatchlings:
- Cotton absorbs rain like a sponge, staying freezing wet and causing hypothermia.
- Long yarn & string tangle tightly around tiny baby bird legs.
- Dryer lint is toxic—filled with synthetic microplastics and chemical detergent fumes.
- 100% Lanolin-Free & Water-Repellent: Naturally sheds rain and snow; dries in minutes.
- Hollow-Core Thermal Warmth: 3x warmer than wool to protect fragile eggs from frost.
- Hand-Carded Safe Staple Length: Zero chemicals, zero tangling, naturally hypoallergenic.
Built for Every Season: From Spring Hatchlings to Winter Blizzards
Whether it’s spring nesting season, summer second broods, autumn roost preparation, or freezing winter snowstorms, backyard birds rely on dry thermal insulation to survive.

Even in heavy snow and frost, our hollow-core alpaca fiber sheds moisture and stays lofty—giving winter songbirds a life-saving thermal lining.
Hand-Packed Inside a Reusable Vintage Metal Wire Heart
Instead of stuffing our precious fleece into flimsy plastic mesh bags that tear in the wind, every heart is crafted from weather-resistant, powder-coated vintage metal wire.
- 360° Breathable Diamond Grid: Promotes natural airflow so rain evaporates quickly and the center fleece stays dry and fluffy.
- Sturdy Clinging Perch for Small Songbirds: Finches, chickadees, titmice, wrens, and nuthatches can perch comfortably on the wire frame while tugging out fibers.
- Opens Easily for Endless Refills: Once your neighborhood birds empty the heart, simply unlatch the frame and refill it with fresh alpaca wool season after season!

We are officially relocating our ranch to Seguin, Texas! Because the Texas heat is so intense, our alpacas stayed behind in Montana waiting for their transport so we can ease them safely into the warmer climate. We have already visited a wonderful alpaca ranch near Seguin and are preparing their brand-new Texas barn.
Before we lock up our Bozeman barn for good, my husband and I are hand-packing the remaining bags of our Montana-shorn fleece harvest. Once this batch is claimed, there won’t be another shearing harvest until our herd settles into Texas next year!

From our barn to your backyard—thank you for helping us give wild birds a warm, safe home while supporting our herd’s big move to Texas.

Over 2,299+ Customers Have Shared Their Love
“I hung mine outside my kitchen window yesterday morning. Within 20 minutes, two chickadees and a tufted titmouse were taking turns pulling out big fluffy beakfuls of the cream alpaca wool! Knowing it came from Pie and Brownie makes it so special.”
“So glad I grabbed the Buy 3 Best Value set! I kept two for our backyard oak trees and gave one to my 78-year-old mom who loves watching birds from her sunroom. The metal heart frame is super sturdy and the alpaca fiber feels like a cloud.”
“We had a heavy spring snowstorm right after I hung this up in Colorado. I worried the fiber would get ruined, but as soon as the sun came out, the alpaca wool puffed right back up completely dry! Now the local finches visit it non-stop.”
“The natural tri-color pattern of brown, cream, and gray looks gorgeous hanging in our crabapple tree. Best of luck to Sarah, Mark, and the herd on your move to Seguin, Texas—we will definitely be ordering refill wool!”
